It was a great weekend for professional sports in Rochester, NY
There was the annual Rochester LPGA golf tournament with $1.5 million in prizes, sunny skies and record crowds (105,000). In years past, I had tended bar at this event, but desk jobs have left me rusty in the skills of mixology/sociology. On Saturday night, I missed the Rochester Rhinos soccer team improving their record to 10-2 and moving into first place of their division. Instead, I went to Rochester's first ever Twilight Criterium, professional bike racing thru our city streets. Lance Armstrong was busy in Europe, but there were several Olympians and top ranked professionals from around the world. The city closed off a 0.95 mile loop of streets for a very organized and high speed race that lasted over two hours. One could walk around the course and see a hundred racers squeeze into tight street corners at 40mph. These guys were in fantastic shape. The organizers also had a beer and sausage stand near the Finish Line, so I was happy ;^)

Baseball, the All-American game
I've been to a dozen or so games this season and it's invigorating:
you're outside in the fresh air and occasional sunshine
you're jumping up and down, cheering, getting some exercise
the peanuts and malted barley beverage are almost a vegetarian diet
and the people-watching is a great lesson in fan motivation.

Nancy Reagan has a powerful voice
While many are mourning the Alzheimer's-complicated death of ex-President Ronald Reagan, many are renewing the call for stem cell research as it applies to that tragic and incurable disease. The former First Lady now has a voice that favors stem cell research and is being heard more clearly than thousands of scientists in years past. Mrs. Reagan's current voice overpowers that of her husband's when he denied federal funding of fetal tissue research during his tenure. Nancy Reagan's 83-year-old voice suddenly overpowers that of ex-President George H.W. Bush who continued the ban during his administration. In the midst of personal sorrow, her voice today can be heard over all of the 1995 Congress who voted down research funds. Perhaps Mrs. Reagan is not only voicing her fairly recent reality, but that of others over the decades.
